This Fall, Project Warm has been invited to participate with Louisville Metro's Creating Safer Neighborhoods Program that will take place in the Buechel Terrace area, Monday, September 18th  thru Friday, September 29th and the Camp Zachary Taylor area, Monday, October 9th thru Friday, October 20th.

The “Creating Safer Neighborhoods” initiative is a project in the Louisville Metro Police Department’s Sixth Division tailored to homeowners in the Buechel Terrace, Camp Zachary Taylor, St. Joseph’s and Belmar neighborhoods. Lowe’s donated $10,000 to provide thousands of homes in those areas with new door locks, window-sash locks, security light fixtures, smoke detectors and about 1,000 home-weatherization kits (modeled after Project Warm's Energy Management Workshop kits).

A press conference will kick-off the program on Tuesday, September 19th at 10:00 a.m. at the Lowe's on Bardstown Rd. (Bashford Manor).

Partnering in this major endeavor and comprising the "Lowe's Heroes" walking teams that will visit homeowners in these two areas are employees from six local Lowe’s stores, staff from the Metro Dept. of Neighborhoods, officers from the Louisville Metro Police Dept. 6th Division, Project Warm volunteers, the Buechel and Camp Taylor Fire Depts. and representatives from Louisville Metro Council members Jim King and Kevin Kramer.

Project Warm will play a vital role by offering guidance and providing training on how to install plastic covering on interior windows in the resident's homes.  The Dept. of Neighborhoods staff along with volunteers from the 6th Division advisory board, and Buechel Terrace / Camp Taylor neighborhood associations will be assisting in stuffing approx. 9,000 packets that will include information about additional services and programs from Metro Police, the Dept. of Neighborhoods and Project Warm to be passed out to all the homes.

This is the second such partnership with Lowe’s. A similar program was conducted in the summer of 2003 in the Germantown, Schnitzelburg, Shelby Park and Smoketown neighborhoods. Since then, at least 25 new neighborhood watches have formed in the participating areas.
